Root coverage:
Frequently, patients may notice that their gums have receded, causing some of the roots to become exposed. This can have both aesthetic concerns and lead to sensitivity in the exposed root area. If a patient has sufficient healthy bone between their teeth, a gum graft can be performed. The purpose of this procedure is to cover the exposed root area and address both the aesthetic aspect and reduce sensitivity.
Gingival augmentation:
In some cases, patients may have thin gums, which means they have insufficient attached gingiva (strong immobile pink gum around the neck of the tooth). This condition puts them at risk of developing further gum recession in that area. To address this concern, a gingival augmentation procedure can be performed. The goal of this procedure is to increase the amount of attached gingiva, which provides the necessary strength to withstand the normal forces exerted on our gums during activities like eating, brushing, and flossing. By enhancing the amount of attached gingiva, the goal is to protect and prevent further recession from developing.
Frenectomy:
In some patients, there is a small piece of muscular tissue called a frenum that connects the lip or tongue to the gums. Due to the presence of muscle in the lips, this frenum can exert excessive pull on the gums, potentially causing them to gradually recede if left untreated. To address this issue, a procedure called frenectomy is performed to remove this piece of tissue. By removing the frenum, we aim to reduce the pulling forces on the gums and prevent further gum recession.
Gingivectomy:
Gingivectomy is a dental procedure designed to enhance aesthetics by reshaping and recontouring excessive gum tissue. It involves the precise removal of extra gum tissue to achieve a more proportionate and visually pleasing smile. This procedure is ideal for individuals seeking improved symmetry or facing issues with an overly prominent gum line.
