Pocket Reduction Surgery

Pocket reduction surgery, also known as flap surgery, is a procedure to treat gum disease and restore gum health. During the surgery, your periodontist will make a small incision in the gum tissue to access the affected area.

The main goal of pocket reduction surgery is to reduce the depth of periodontal pockets, which are spaces that form between the gums and teeth due to gum disease. These pockets can trap bacteria, leading to further infection and inflammation. By cleaning the pockets thoroughly and removing any accumulated plaque and tartar, the surgeon aims to eliminate the bacteria and create a more favorable environment for the gum tissue to reattach to the clean root surfaces.

After treatment, the gum tissue is repositioned and sutured back into place. Good daily oral hygiene and excellent plaque removal following post-operative instructions are crucial for successful recovery. The surgery aims to improve gum health, reduce pocket depth, and preserve tooth stability.
