Periodontal Supportive Maintenance Therapy
Periodontal Supportive Maintenance Therapy
Periodontal supportive maintenance therapy, also known as periodontal maintenance is an essential part of the long-term management and care for patients who have been diagnosed with periodontal disease or have undergone periodontal treatment. Its primary goal is to prevent the progression of the disease, maintain the health of the gums and supporting structures, and preserve the results achieved through previous treatment.
It involves regular visits every three to four months to maintain gum health and prevent disease progression. During these visits, a comprehensive oral examination is conducted, and scaling and root planing is performed with local anesthetic if necessary. The dental team closely monitors the patient’s oral health and plaque control and identifies any changes or concerns early on, and provides additional treatments if needed. Good oral hygiene practices at home are crucial, and open communication with the dental team is encouraged. By actively participating in maintenance therapy, patients can preserve their oral health, prevent tooth loss, and potentially reduce the risk of systemic diseases associated with periodontal disease.
