Peri-Implant Disease
Following the placement of an implant, it is possible for inflammation to develop around it, similar to what can occur around a natural tooth. When inflammation is limited to the gums, it is known as gingivitis for teeth, whereas around an implant, it is called peri-implant mucositis which usually can be reversible if optimal oral hygiene is practiced.
If the inflammation progresses to affect the bone and results in bone loss around a tooth, it is termed periodontitis. Similarly, when inflammation leads to bone loss around an implant, it is referred to as peri-implantitis. Treatment options for peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis include both non-surgical and surgical approaches, similar to the treatments available for gingivitis and periodontitis.
